September 5th to 7th - With the internationals taking place, there was just one game in the top division. Harry Wood's sixth goal of the season, a late penalty, was enough to see Shelbourne past Galway on Sunday night. The win moved Shelbourne back into the top four. With a game in hand on both Bohemians and Derry City, Joey O'Brien's side will be hoping for a strong finish to the league season to return to the Conference League qualifiers next summer. In the first division, the top two were both held to draws. The game between Wexford and Dundalk finished scoreless. However, second placed Cobh Ramblers couldn't take advantage - they were held to a one-all draw in Kerry. The gap between first and second remains at six points with just six games to go. Cobh host Dundalk on the final day of the season - that could be an interesting evening if they manage to narrow the gap between now and then. Elsewhere, Bray Wanderers guaranteed themselves a playoff spot. They beat Athlone Town three-one to give themselves at least third place in the table. UCD still remain on course for an extended season despite defeat in Limerick. Nikodem Kozlowski's 96th minute goal saw Treaty United beat the Students and go three points clear of Finn Harps in the last playoff spot. Finn Harps lead until the last five minutes in Longford but had to settle for a point when Emmanuel James equalised late on for the hosts. Three ten-pointers sees Alan O'Brien lead the September monthly competition with a score of 40 points so far. He's twelve points clear of Gary Donnelly in second place. Two points further back are James Connolly and myself sharing third place. Full details below: |

September 12th - Just one game took place in the Premier Division with the rest occupied by the FAI Cup quarter finals. Derry City and Bohemians swapped places in the table after the visitors came out on top by the odd goal in seven at Dalymount. Tiernan Lynch's side moved back into second place in the table - Bohs came back twice from behind to level matters up but Dipo Akinyemi's goal with fifteen minutes to go proved decisive. Derry held on despite a second yellow card for Ronan Boyce. There were comfortable wins for the top two in the First Division. Leaders Dundalk maintained their six point lead with a three-one win at home to Bray Wanderers. Cobh Ramblers kept the title race alive with a three-nil win at home to Treaty United. UCD's two-one win at home to Longford Town pretty much cemented their playoff place. After winning August's monthly competition, Derek McDonald now leads the September competition with 55 points so far. Alan O'Brien is second with Jimmy Maguire a couple of points further back in third. A pair of Gary's - Donnelly and Fitzpatrick, complete the top five for the month so far. Full details below: |
September 19th and 20th - Shamrock Rovers' march towards another title hit a bit of a speedbump in Cork. The Hoops looked to be heading for another three points with Danny Grant's goal until Darragh Crowley fired home an equaliser for the hosts in injury time. Stephen Bradley's side had to settle for a point but find themselves seven points clear of Bohemians with two games in hand. Bohemians were the only team to win in the Premier Division - goals from Niall Morahan and Archie Meekison either side of Padraig Amond's equaliser saw them regain second place ahead of next Friday's meeting in Tallaght. The other three games in the division finished one-all. Derry were ahead at home to Shelbourne but Mipo Odubeko's second half goal earned a point for the champions defunct. St Patricks Athletic were held at home by Galway United while Drogheda and Sligo Rovers couldn't be separated either. Shelbourne, Pats and Drogheda are all level on 43 points in the battle for fourth spot with the Tolka Park side having a game in hand. In the first division there were surprising defeats for the top two. Dundalk remain six points clear despite a three-two defeat at Longford. It was the same scoreline at Ferrycarrig Park where Wexford beat Cobh Ramblers to keep their playoff hopes alive. Another three-two scoreline went in favour of Treaty United who beat Athlone Town courtesy of Lee Devitt's last minute penalty. UCD's playoff place is now mathematically connfirmed after beating Kerry two-one in Belfield. Gary Fitzpatrick is the new leader in the September competition. A score of 52 points helps him to a two point lead over Jimmy Maguire in second place. There's a gap of eleven points then back to Niall Hayden in third with Andy Dunne and Gary Parsons completing the top five - full details below: |

September 22nd to 27th - Shamrock Rovers have all but confirmed a fifth title in six seasons after two victories this week. A two-one win in Waterford on Monday night was followed by a win by the same score against old rivals Bohemians on Friday night. A second half winner from Danny Mandroiu saw Stephen Bradley's side pick up the win which leaves them pretty much uncatchable at the top of the table. A defeat in Drogheda for Derry would have confirmed the title but Danny Mullen's equaliser earned a point which leaves Tiernan Lynch's side twelve points behind the leaders with four games to play and an inferior goal difference of seventeen goals to make up too... The battle for the European places will probably give the most entertainment over the last few weeks of the season. Derry and Bohs remain in second and third place. Drogheda are fourth with St Patricks Athletic and Shelbourne currently sharing fifth place. Shels have a match in hand, in Tallaght, which could leave them just a point off the top three. Pats did their chances no favours at all, losing one-nil in Sligo on Saturday night. This could go down to the final day of the season when Drogheda face Bohemians and Shelbourne host St Patricks Athletic... At the bottom, Cork City's defeat in Galway leaves them eleven points adrift of their opponents and Waterford with just four games to go. It would take another mathematical miracle for Ger Nash's team to get out of this one. Again, the final day's fixtures list has placed Waterford at home to Galway - that could be a survival playoff with the winners preserving top division status with the losers facing the playoffs. Waterford will have a new manager in charge for that one with John Coleman collecting his P45 after defeat against Shelbourne. Things are slightly clearer in the First Division. A three-two win at home to UCD leaves Dundalk six points clear with three games to go. Cobh Ramblers remain in second place after a four-one win at home to Finn Harps. Bray and UCD are odds on to face each other in one of the playoff semi-finals. Wexford's win in Athlone on Friday night leaves them just a point behind Treaty United in the battle for the last playoff place. They play on the final night in Wexford as the fixtures computer has thrown up another beauty. A score of 92 points from the Monday and weekend games from Gary Fitzpatrick (including no less than 7 ten-pointers) saw him canter to a twenty eight point victory in September. Alan O'Brien was best of the rest with Andy Dunne and Shane McCormack sharing third place for the month: |
