October 2nd - We head into the final four rounds of games in the Premier Division with three teams level on 59 points. Bohemians climbed to second in the table with a two-one win in Dundalk. Goals from Colm Whelan and Ross Tierney sent them back down the M1 with another three points. Daryl Horgan scored a late penalty but it was to no avail as the home side's chances of a top four finish were dealt another blow. The race for the playoff spots in the first division will go down to the wire. Four teams chasing the final two playoff spots are separated by just one point. Cobh Ramblers beat Bray Wanderers four-one in the Carlisle Grounds to climb to fourth in the table. Longford Town are fifth after a three-all draw in Wexford - it could have been so much better for the Midlanders but they conceded a last minute equaliser. Kerry are sixth after coming from behind to win two-one at Finn Harps. Athlone Town are seventh after a two-one win at home to the champions Cork City. The other game in the first division saw UCD win four-nil in Limerick at Treaty United. The final monthly competition of the season sees five people leading on 31 points - Craig Whelan, Darragh Kenny, Kev Hardiman, Kevin McQuaide and Rob Gaffney all got off to a fast start for the month - full details below: |
October 8th and 9th - The two games in the Premier Division were a tale of two Rovers. Shamrock Rovers barely needed to break sweat in a three-one win at home to Drogheda United. After Graham Burke opened the scoring in the first minute, John McGovern added two more before half-time to earn the three points to send the Hoops back to the top of the table. The defending champions are now three points clear with four games to play ahead of Bohemians visit to Tallaght on Monday night. Sligo Rovers long stay in the top division came to an end on Friday night. A five-one defeat at Shelbourne confirmed their expected relegation after a poor season. Former manager John Russell being in the opposition dugout probably rubbed salt into the wounds. In the first division, the playoff picture became a little clearer with two teams confirming their spots. Bray Wanderers came from two goals down to earn a point at home to Wexford. UCD were held at home by Longford but still guaranteed an extended season. A late equaliser for Longford kept them in the final playoff place - they face Athlone Town next weekend with both sides needing a win. Kerry were the big winners on Friday night - a two-nil win in Cobh gives them a great chance of extending their season. Cobh Ramblers will need to win at Treaty United to keep their hopes alive. An excellent score of 45 points sent Francis Gilligan clear at the top of the October leaderboard. Carl Toner and Cormac Dennigan shared second place, fourteen off the lead. Craig Whelan and Gary Parsons complete the top five for the month so far: |

October 12th to 17th - The drama in the Premier Division title race continued this week. Shamrock Rovers looked like they had done the hard work in retaining their crown after a two-one win over Bohemians on Monday night. However, their first defeat in Galway since 2005 on Friday night threw the race wide back open. First half goals from Jimmy Keohane and Aaron Bolger gave the Tribesmen an unexpected three points. St Patricks Athletic failed to take advantage though, losing two-one at home to Shelbourne. The Saints took the lead through Jamie Lennon (after Aidan Keena had missed a penalty). Second half goals from Sean Moore and Daniel Kelly gave John Russell's side another three points, leaving the Inchicore side six points off the lead. They play their game in hand on Monday night in Derry, needing three points to keep their hopes alive. After thinking their challenge was done after defeat in Tallaght on Monday night, a two-one win at home to Waterford on Friday night has Bohemians back in the mix. Ryan Burke's second half winner leaves Alan Reynolds' side three points behind the leaders with Shelbourne visiting Dalymount on Friday night. Relegated Sligo Rovers will travel to Tallaght on Friday night remembering they've won on their last two visits to the champions. Another night of drama awaits. At the wrong end of the table, Drogheda picked up a big three points with a two-nil win at home to cup finalists Derry City. Waterford are now in the bottom two but will move ahead of Kevin Doherty's side if they win their game in hand at home to Galway on Monday night. The first division playoffs were also decided on Friday night. UCD finished second in the table after a five-two win in Wexford. They'll play Longford Town who beat Athlone one-nil to finish fifth. Bray Wanderers slipped to a two-nil defeat at bottom side Finn Harps knowing their playoff position was already secured. They'll play Kerry who picked up the point they needed after a one-all draw at home to champions Cork City. An excellent score of 42 points sent Jason Maloney to the top of the October standings. In a case of fantasy echoing reality, we have a St Patricks Athletic fan, Craig Whelan, six points off the lead. Cillian O'Reilly has climbed to third with the top five completed by Darragh Kenny and Eamonn Gallagher - full details below: |
