Greatest League - July 2026

July 3rd and 4th - The top three all won on Friday night. Shamrock Rovers had to come from behind to win two-one in Sligo. The hosts were ahead early on through Will Fitzgerald. The champions were so poor in the first half that Stephen Bradley made four subs at half time. One of those introduced, Jack Byrne, equalised within two minutes while another, Graham Burke, scored the winner in the final ten minutes after Sligo had been reduced to ten men.

Bohemians remain in second after a two-nil win in Drogheda. Mark Doyle opened the scoring but, unfortunately for the home fans, it was into his own net. Further salt was rubbed into the Drogheda wounds when former player Douglas Jame-Taylor added a second to secure the points for Alan Reynolds' side. St Patricks Athletic brushed aside Galway United's challenge. Three early goals from Edmondsen, Leavy and Keena gave Stephen Kenny's side another three points. The Inchicore side will now play two games in hand while their rivals are playing in Europe. The gap on the leaders might be down to three points if they win both of those.

Waterford's resurgence continued - they stunned Derry City four-two at the Brandywell. The Blues moved off the bottom of the table ahead of Sligo Rovers on goal difference after that win. Shelbourne picked up a big three points in the battle for fourth spot - they came from behind to beat Dundalk two-one at Tolka Park and close the gap on their opponents to just one point.

If the first division was a boxing match then the referee would surely have stopped the fight by now. Cork City won the Leeside derby beating Cobh Ramblers by a goal to nil on Friday night. UCD dropped eighteen points behind the leaders on Saturday night. Despite leading at half-time, they lost two-one in Longford. The hosts moved into the final playoff place with those three points.

Bray Wanderers remain in third place - they beat Athlone Town two-nil in the Carlisle Grounds. Kerry's winning run came to an end with a two-one defeat at bottom side Treaty United. Wexford slipped to a one-nil defeat at Finn Harps to drop out of the playoff positions.

Five correct scorelines from this round of games gave Realtin Dunne an excellent score of 68 points and an early lead in the July monthly competition. Niall Carroll is in second place, thirteen points off the lead. Gerry Draper, Keith Ryan and Shane Coughlan complete the top five so far:

July 10th and 11th - With leaders Shamrock Rovers not playing, St Patricks Athletic missed the opportunity to make inroads into their lead at the top of the table. Stephen Kenny's side needed a 95th minute penalty from Aidan Keena to leave Waterford with a point. Conan Noonan, once a Hoop, had given the home side the lead until that late concession. Pats are now eight points behind the leaders with just one game in hand.

Shane Farrell was the hero as Drogheda United won the Louth Derby. He scored two second half goals to turnaround a half time deficit and give Kevin Doherty's side a big three points. Sligo Rovers remain bottom of the table after losing three-two at Galway United on Saturday evening. In what looks like John Russell's final game in charge, they had fought from two down to level the score but Matty Wolfe scored an injury time winner for John Caulfield's side who are now seven points clear of their opponents.

The top two going into this round of games in the first division both lost. A remarkable game in Turner's Cross saw Cork City lose four-three at home to Longford Town. The runaway leaders' third defeat of the season came in injury time following Stefan Ugbesia's goal. UCD crashed to a six-nil defeat at Bray Wanderers. Ifunanyachi Achara scored a hat-trick in that one. Bray's revenue will rocket if names on the back of their jerseys are charged by the letter after that win...

Elsewhere in the first division, Cobh Ramblers remain in fourth place despite a two-nil defeat at Athlone. Wexford are three points outside the playoff places after they dropped points in a two-all draw at home to Kerry. Treaty United moved off the bottom of the table after a one-nil win in Finn Harps who replace the Limerick side in last place.

Despite scoring only eight points, Realtin Dunne retains her lead at the top of the July leaderboard. She has a ten point lead over John Brophy who was this weekend's top scorer with an excellent 38 points. Third place is shared Gerry Draper and Niall Carroll. Paul Moore is fifth. We have three other new faces in the top ten too - Sean Judd, Kev Hardiman and Gary Donnelly. Full details below:

July 24th and 25th - The three games in the Premier Division all ended in draws this weekend. St Patricks Athletic missed another opportunity to close the gap on the leaders when they drew one-all at home to Dundalk. Daryl Horgan put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot before Sean Hoare equalised against his former side in the second half. That stalemate means both Pats and Bohemians trail leaders Shamrock Rovers by seven points with eleven games to play in the top division.

The bottom four met in the other two games and with both games finishing level, the relegation pictures remains unchanged. Galway United's short stint at the gaelic grounds ended with a nil-all draw at home to Waterford. Sligo Rovers remain bottom of the table - they conceded a late equaliser at home to Drogheda United. Cian Kavanagh's double was cancelled out by goals from Thomas Oluwa and Shane Farrell. Darren Purse had to settle for a point in his first game in charge of the Bit'o'Red.

Cork City suffered a second consecutive defeat in the first division. They were on the receiving end of a five-two drubbing by UCD in Belfield - an excellent turnaround from the Students who conceded six on their last outing. Their opponents that day, Bray Wanderers, came from behind to win two-one at Cobh Ramblers. The Wicklow side are fourteen points behind the leaders.

Wexford put their poor recent form behind them to win two-one in Longford. The win sees them climb to fourth in the table on goal difference ahead of their opponents. Kerry are just two points outside the playoffs - they beat bottom of the table Finn Harps two-one. The final game in the first division saw Treaty United move four points clear of the bottom side with a two-one win at home to Athlone Town.

John Brophy and Luke Hogan share top spot for July heading into next weekend's final games. They're just three points ahead of Keith Ryan and Sean Judd who share third place. With just seven points separating the top ten, we're in for a good finish to the monthly competition next week:

July 31st - Shamrock Rovers finished a busy July with an eight point lead at the top of the Premier Division. For the second time this season, the Hoops played out a goalless draw with Drogheda United in Sullivan and Lambe Park. The game was fairly short on incident until Pico Lopes earned a red card late on for a foul on Shane Farrell. Friday's second match was also in Louth and also finished in a draw. Dundalk looked to be heading for victory against Sligo Rovers through Daryl Horgan's goal. However, Gareth McElroy scored an injury time equaliser to earn the visitors a much needed point in their battle to stay up.

A three-nil win against Finn Harps saw Cork City restore their seventeen point lead at the top of the first division. All the goals came in the final quarter as the champions-elect got their title procession back on track. The surprise result of the night came in Bray where the hosts lost four-nil at home to Kerry. An early red card had the Seasiders on the back foot and Kerry took advantage - Vincent Borden's opener just before the break set the Kingdom on their way to a big win.

UCD moved level with Bray in second place following a scoreless draw in Athlone. Longford Town won one-nil at Treaty United to climb to fourth in the table. Darragh Murtagh scored the only goal in Markets Field. Cobh Ramblers are fifth in the table in the final playoff spot - they beat Wexford one-nil in St Colman's Park.

A score of 33 points from Friday night's games gave John Brophy a comfortable victory in the July monthly contest. He had sixteen points to spare over Gerry Draper and Michael Tracy who shared second place. Keith Ryan finished fourth with Realtin Dunne completing the top five for the month - full details below:
