August 2nd - Three games took place in the Premier Division on Sunday afternoon with the European teams that played on Thursday all dropping points. St Patricks Athletic and Bohemians both failed to make ground on the leaders' dropped points on Friday night. Pats were held at home by Derry City - James Clarke cancelled out Aidan Keena's opener from the penalty spot. It also finished one-all at Dalymount Park where Bohemians were held by Galway United. The Phibsboro side also lead from the penalty spot, through Colm Whelan, but John Caulfield's side earned a point through Aaron Bolger's equaliser before half time. As it transpired, Waterford were the only team to record a victory in the Premier Division at the weekend. Tommy Lonergan headed home a second half winner as Shelbourne were beaten at the Regional Sports Centre. That win moved Graham Coughlan's side three points clear of bottom side Sligo Rovers. Kevin McQuaide picked up an excellent 20 points from the three games on Sunday to take an early lead in the monthly. Second place is shared by four people on 17 points - Git Uzell, Joseph Kavanagh, Michael Treacy and Niall Carroll. |
August 7th and 9th - A feisty affair in Tallaght saw Shamrock Rovers beat Dundalk three-two. All the goals came in the first half. Dundalk twice equalised - goals from Rob Cornwall and Daryl Horgan cancelling out strikes from Dylan Watts and Michael Noonan. Jonathan Afolabi's first goal for the Hoops not long before half-time proved to be the winner - a big three points for Stephen Bradley's side in between two legs of a European tie. The gap at the top remains seven points - St Patrick's Athletic beat Shelbourne two-one on Sunday evening. First half goals from new signing Anthony Olusanya and James Brown were enough for Stephen Kenny's side to keep the leaders in sight. A bad week for Bohemians ended with a three-one defeat in Waterford. Alan Reynolds' side are now ten points behind the leaders with nine games to play. Waterford's great run of form continued as they moved six points clear of Sligo Rovers in last place. They lost two-nil at Derry, who won their first game since Tiernan Lynch's departure. Two other sides in the relegation battle, Galway United and Drogheda United, drew nil-all in Eamon Deacy Park. David Hurley missed a penalty to win all three points for the home side. Cork City's lead in the first division remains at twenty points with the top three all winning. Three wins from their remaining nine games will see an immediate return to the Premier Division for Barry Robson's side. They had to come from behind to beat an in-form Kerry side though - three goals in the final quarter earning a three-one win. The Carlisle Grounds seems to be the venue for goals - Bray put their recent poor form behind them to beat bottom side Finn Harps by five goals to nil. UCD were also among the goals - they beat Wexford four-one at UCD Bowl. Longford Town remain in fourth place despite a two-one defeat to Athlone Town in El Classico. Cobh Ramblers are in the final play-off spot. Their two-nil win at home to Treaty United saw them climb to fifth in the table. Kevin Nolan tops the August leaderboard so far with sixty-nine points. He has a two point lead over Kev Hardiman and Niall Hayden who share second place. Fourth place is shared by overall leader, Caroline Carroll, and Donncha MacMaolain - full details below: |

August 21st and 22nd - A good week for St Patricks Athletic started with cup success and ended with them cutting the gap at the top of the table to just four points. Drogheda is never an easy place to go to but a two-nil victory for Stephen Kenny's side was an excellent end to a good week. The Inchicore side could cut the gap to just one point with victory at home to Waterford next Friday - Shamrock Rovers don't play until Sunday week when they visit Derry. Bohemians kept in touch with the top two with victory over Derry City. There were goals galore at Dalymount as Bohs came out on top by five goals to three. James Clarke saw red against his former side with Ross Tierney and Micheal Duffy both notching doubles amid the madness. Dundalk's poor run of form continued as they lost two-one at home to Galway United. The Lilywhites are now only three points clear of Shelbourne who have two games in hand with a chance to take fourth place from the Louth side. The relegation six-pointer between Sligo Rovers and Waterford ended scoreless. A better point for the visitors than the hosts, Sligo remain five points adrift at the bottom of the table. Cork City remain twenty points clear in the first division. Promotion could be confirmed as early as next weekend if results go their way. That's despite a two-all draw at Treaty United last night. UCD are second in the table but they were held to a one-all draw in Kerry. Third placed Bray Wanderers were among the goals again but ended up on the wrong end of a four-two defeat in Longford on Saturday night. That win moved the Midlands side up to fourth in the table. Cobh Ramblers retained the last playoff spot with a three-one win at bottom side Finn Harps. They're four points clear of Kerry in fifth. Wexford's playoff hopes took a knock with a two-nil defeat at home to Athlone Town. With just next weekend's games to go, we have plenty of contenders for the monthly prize for August. Tony McNamee leads the way on 93 points. He's three points clear of Kevin Nolan in second place. Third place is shared by three people - Joseph Kavanagh, Luke Hogan and Sean Judd. Just ten points separate first from twelfth so it's all to play for next weekend: |

August 28th and 30th - Shamrock Rovers produced a late fightback in Derry on Sunday evening to salvage a point. The home side looked to be heading to a comfortable three points, leading three-one with a quarter of an hour to go. The introduction of Will Fitzgerald from the bench proved decisive though as he came up with two assists - one for Graham Burke, the other for fellow sub Dylan Watts as the champions went five clear with a game in hand (next Friday against Shelbourne). As happens so often, St Patricks Athletic missed out on the chance to move within striking distance of the lead. They were the latest side to fall victim to a revitalised Waterford. Graham Coughlan's side won two-nil in Richmond Park to prevent the hosts from moving to within a point of the leaders. Bohemians moved level on points with the Inchicore side, brushing Sligo Rovers aside by three goals to nil in Dalymount Park. Sligo remain five points behind Drogheda United - the Louth Derby is never dull and the lead changed hands a couple of times before Daryl Horgan earned all three points for Dundalk with a last minute free-kick. The other game in the top division also had late drama - Jimmy Keohane's late goal giving Galway United a point at home to Shelbourne. A point away to Bray Wanderers next Friday night should be enough to confirm Cork City's return to the top division. The runaway leaders beat Wexford on Friday night by two goals to nil at Turners Cross. UCD are still in second place - they came out on top of a nine-goal thriller in Belfield edging out Finn Harps by five goals to four. A second defeat in the midlands in a week for Bray Wanderers has the Seagulls looking over their shoulders in the battle for a playoff spot. A two-one defeat in Athlone means they're only four points clear of Kerry in sixth place. The Kingdom beat Treaty United three-one. The two other teams in the playoff spots, Longford Town and Cobh Ramblers shared the points after a two-all draw. Tony McNamee held on to top spot to win the August competition by just two points. Joseph Kavanagh and Tommy Hamill finished the month strongly but fell just short in second and third place respectively. Shane McCormack and Jimmy Maguire completed the top five - full details below: |
